The historical Hereke Castle, which is estimated to have been built during the Roman Empire period in the 640s, was unearthed in the Hereke region. The castle, which was destroyed in time, was restored by the Körfez Municipality, in accordance with its original form, using the drawings of Matrakçı Nasuh.
Mentioned in Evliya Çelebi’s Travel Book, the castle is getting ready to host local and foreign tourists on a peak overlooking the Izmit Bay. It is stated that the castle will be opened to tourism after the landscaping works to be completed in the coming months.
